This month, as part of Waitukubuli Artist Association (WAA) year of the artist, and part of DOMFESTA, a solo art exhibition by Carol Sorhaindo entitled ‘Deep Rooted’, will be featured. During the exhibition, which opens at The Old Mill Cultural Centre on Friday 31st May at 6 pm, Carol will showcase paintings and textile works of a botanical nature. The exhibition can also be viewed from Monday 3rd June to Wednesday 5th, between the hours 9 am – 4 pm when the artist will be available to talk about her work.
Carol who has recently returned ‘home’, has worked with schools and communities in the UK using art as a therapeutic medium to support mental well being. She says “Growing up in Dominica and coming from an extended family who have always been into agriculture and gardening, it is no surprise I have an interest in plants. Working with the land, despite our history which became steeped in pain, is something to be proud of, and I think young people in Dominica should be encouraged to engage with the land and learn about the history, properties, and uses of plants around them as much as possible.
Having spent many years out of Dominica, I have had to search for the things which support my own mental well being; things which keep me rooted and grounded. Africa and Dominica have been constant sources of inspiration, pride, and support. The title “Deep Rooted” was chosen for this exhibition because the root is the part of the plant which supports and nourishes. In order to heal and work together as a nation, we must dig deep into the roots however painful.”
On Tuesday 2nd June, Carol invites the public to stop by and create a small piece of nature-inspired art to take away and to also share their plant stories. Carol thanks both WAA and The Dominica Cultural Division for their support. Look out for the next WAA exhibition.
