Treneese Hamilton’s journey to gold – Standing at the top of the podium

At age eighteen, Treneese Hamilton has embarked on one of the most memorable and momentous occasions of her life. Hamilton, who is a 2nd year biology student at the Dominica State College, is also a very committed shot putter. She has represented Dominica in various regional competitions, the most recent being the 2022 CARIFTA Games held in Jamaica.

Notably, a few days ago Hamilton participated in the Under 20 shot put event and obtained gold, surpassing her other competitors. Upon interview with Emonews, she expressed her excitement for having captured such a medal. “I felt relieved qualifying for the CARIFTA Games because it was the first one after a two year hiatus and was my fourth and last CARIFTA. I feel accomplished, ecstatic, just overall elated with myself after winning gold. I have been working towards this for a long while after winning bronze in 2018 and silver in 2019. It was only fitting that I completed my series by ending it off with the Gold,” she stated.

Hamilton continued, “I have been an athlete since Grade 4, having played netball at a very young age and then began taking part in Track and Field at Age 12 in 1st form at the Dominica Grammar School.” Having gained an early foundation in athletics, she felt confident that she would go out to represent Dominica to the best of her ability.  “I went into the games level headed. I had a “Fear no one but God” attitude which allowed me to just go out and have fun regardless of who my competitors were. I set my eyes on a goal and I did everything necessary to achieve that goal,” she remarked.

Moreover, Hamilton noted that athletics training leading up to the games was strictly technical work. “We focused mainly on my execution and recovery in the circle. A lot of core work was also done on my own at home after training sessions,” she mentioned.

Furthermore, she expressed sincere gratitude to everyone who has contributed to her success thus far. “I am forever grateful to God, my parents, extended family, friends, my little sister who has been my best friend and motivator in everything that I do, my coach and cousin, Joel Hamilton, for his patience and expertise to be able to coach me to the level that I am now and their role in my current success,” she thanked.

Hamilton also communicated her intention to further her education and to continue training at a school in the United States. While she seeks to expand and broaden her scope, she stands committed to representing Dominica at international competitions and hopes that she can someday be an inspiration to younger throwers in Dominica.

As Hamilton concludes her CARIFTA journey, Emonews extends congratulations to her and wishes her future success.
