179 Graduate From Youth Skills Training Program

The 47th graduation ceremony of the Youth Development Division which took place on March 31 at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium revealed the great work that is continually being done by the division.

The graduation marked the successful completion of 179 participants; 69 males and 110 females, from 14 skills training modules. The participants were awarded entry-level skills certification in Computer Literacy, Woodwork, Auto Body Repair, Hospitality Arts, Building Maintenance,  Electrical Wiring and Furniture making.

Participant Larissa Blackwood testified that the programme benefitted her in many ways. She took part in the Computer Literacy Module although she already had some knowledge of computers. She was able to obtained an average in her assignments that she never thought possible and this fueled her confidence and knowledge to such a degree that she decided to pursue a Bachelors degree in accounting. She expressed thanks to her support system including parents, significant other and teachers who she credits for her success as well.

Alex Francis who participated in the Building Maintenance module said that he already had some experience and jumped at the opportunity of getting a certificate in also to master the skills he already professed. He said that the course allowed him to develop his skills and made him more confident and focused. He describes the experience as edifying and challenging. He said that he and his course mates were able to work as a team to tackle challenges, stay focused and work together to complete the program. Francis is confident and satisfied with the excellent and knows that with more experience he is on his way to becoming a trademan in his field.

Meanwhile, Minister for Youth Development, Hon. Adis King, quoting from another said that somerimes youu can’t build a future for Youth but you must ensure that you build Youth for the future and that is exactly what the Youth Division hS been involved in doing. According to her, over 8000 young people have benefitted from the programmes of the Division.   This has been rewarding as the Division continues to equip young Dominicans with marketable skills, on the job training and social skills which prepare them for employment.

The Youth Development Division’s Youth Skill Training program is designed to provide four months of technical skill training in marketable skills to young people.


This is coupled with social skills , business skills,  health and family life skills and office etiquette components to enhance employability and character formation for the production of well- rounded candidates for the job market.

This year’s graduation was held under the theme, ‘Building Resilience one training at a time’.
