ST. LUCIA DEFEATS DOMINICA IN UNDER-19 OPENER.

A hattrick from Tarrique Edward helped St. Lucia earn a hard fought three-wicket victory over Dominica on the opening day of the 2023 Winlott Inc Windward Islands Under-19 50-Overs Cricket Tournament at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground yesterday.

Dominica were able to put together only 155 all out after winning the toss. Opening the innings, skipper Stephan Pascal top-scored with 47 off 75 balls with six fours and a six. At one stage, Dominica were 103 for 1 after 21 overs before skipper Tarrique Edward performed the astonishing feat of registering a hattrick from the first three balls of the 25th over, thus reducing Dominica to 105 for 5. He had Stephan Pascal caught by Amari Venner at slip, and then accounted for Kyron Phillip and Jerlani Joseph – both via the LBW route. Edward finished with 3 for 14 from his 10 overs, while Kevin Gassie (2 for 23), Shawnil Edward (2 for 27) and Royce Paul (2 for 14) were also got among the wickets.

When St. Lucia began their chase, their backs were against the ropes after five wickets went down for 88 after 25 overs. However, two vital partnerships – a fourth-wicket stand of 54 between Jonathan Daniel (31) and Bolton Sayers, and then an unbroken eight-wicket stand of 53 off 70 deliveries between Sayers and Shawnil Edward (22) saw them home safely to victory.

Sayers, who held the innings together, top-scored with 40 that contained just two fours while facing 88 deliveries. For Dominica, Left-arm spinner, Jerlani Joseph, ended with 3 for 31.

Final Scores:

Dominica Under-19s 155 all out in 43.5 overs.

St. Lucia Under-19s 156 for 7 in 42 overs.

In the other match on the day, St. Vincent & The Grenadines got the better of Grenada by two wickets in a thrilling encounter at the Gros Islet Playing Field.

After being sent in, Grenada totalled 246 all out in 49.4 overs with six batters reaching double figures.

Kellis Andrew top-scored with 65 made from 76 balls with five fours and two sixes. Kirtsen Murray (42), Jerel Jeremiah (26), Justin John (22), Kervyn Gangadeen (18), and Jamal Lambert (17) had useful knocks.

For St. Vincent & The Grenadines the wickets were taken by Kirtney Franklyn 2 for 63, Devonte McDowall 2 for 51, Luke Wilson 2 for 31, while Watson Seaton and Kodi Grant ended with one wicket each.

In reply, St. Vincent & The Grenadines reached their target in 48 overs with the best partnerships of the innings being 62 for the third-wicket between Ethan Gibson (49) and wicketkeeper Reshawn Lewis (30), and 55 for the fifth-wicket between Joe Williams (33) and Javan Richardson (38 not out).

With eight wickets down and 23 more runs required for victory, Richardson and captain Luke Wilson (17) kept calm and guided their team home.

Kirtsen Murray was Grenada’s most successful bowler, picking up 3 for 40, while Kelshon Andrew and Kirt Murray finished with figures of 2 for 55 and 2 for 61 respectively.
