La Salette Global Association Remembers Victims Of Hurricane Maria; Donates To St.Luke’s Primary

The La Salette Global Association unveiled a monument in the community of Pointe Mitchel in 2017 and held a procession to the monument on Sunday in remembrance of the villagers who lost their lives during Hurricane Maria.

Representative of the La Salette Global Association,  Roanna Joseph said, “We are here to commemorate the third anniversary of the death of our loved ones who tragically lost their lives during the passage of Hurricane Maria on the dreadful night of September 18, 2017. Every year on this day, it is with no doubt the emotions are all over and though many of us try to forget what took place that night, it is very difficult to forget. We must remember and I say we must remember, all those who called out for help and were never heard and even those who never got the chance to cry out for help and were swept away.”

She continued,  “To date many of our family members are still missing but none the less  we must remember them and pay respect to them”.

Nigel Lockhart, Chairman of the La Salette Global Association who was unable to be at the ceremony sent his remarks. He encouraged villagers to stand together and assist one another to grow the community and Dominica.  He said, “…three years on we honor our lost friends, we honor our lost families.  These words will never come near to the emotions and  hurt felt by the family and loved ones of those we lost but we want to remember their joy and splendor and the love they had for us. Let us not make this day a sad day, just let us rejoice and remember our family members who passed on…let us promise to be one village, one community and one Dominica. Let us be the shoulder, the strength that our brothers and sisters can cry on”.

The Association also made a donation of 12 ceiling fans to the St. Luke’s Primary School. Earlier this year, they also assisted a young mother from the community and plans to continue helping in the development of the community in other ways.

Association representative,  Roanna Joseph said that the Association ‘especially want to remember our children and future leaders’. Other areas of focus for the Association include mentorship and financial contributions.
