According to Honorable Octavia Alfred, Minister for Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training and Nation Excellence, “This year the grade six national assessment is scheduled for May 26th and 27th 2022. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic the academic year 2021/2022 began in October of 2021, one month after the scheduled start date.”
Pointedly, Alfred articulated that due to the virtual forum which replaced the regular face to face classes, students were unable to master certain courses and skills particularly due to poor internet access and support at home. Accordingly, the Ministry has taken an important decision to rescheduled the annual grade six national assessment to June 23rd and 24th 2022.
“These new dates will allow students to received additional instructional support by schools since they are engaged in face to face learning presently,” Alfred expressed.
As per the regular curriculum, children will be assessed on Language Art, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. The first three subjects will be assessed via written papers while Social Science will be assessed via an e-paper nationally.
Alfred noted that the Ministry of Education IT Unit will continue to provide support to all schools across Dominica to ensure that students are adequately prepared for the online assessment prior to examinations.
As the Ministry prepares for the final examinations, they reiterate the need for schools to continue to adhere to all Covid-19 protocols as they tackle face to face learning.
