The opposition United Workers Party (UWP) will formally present its 21 candidates to Dominica and the world by extension. The event will take place Sunday 19, May at 3:00 PM on the Dame Mary Eugenia Charles Boulevard.
While speaking at a press conference, president of the UWP, Isaac Baptiste, said that the team comprises “dynamic, competent, experienced and trustworthy” individuals who are committed to driving policies geared towards “economic progress, positive social transformation, transparency, and accountability”. He then gave way for the party leader to speak.
Linton opened his speech by stating that the twenty-one (21) candidates accepted the call to serve after hearing a resonated cry by many in their communities. He stated that the twenty-one (21) champions for real change were “carefully selected to represent the best alignment of leadership and management resources to the responsibility of national development”.
He went on to list the reasons why the team was put together and their assignment. Among the reasons being, to “serve on the solid foundation principles of equal opportunity, social justice, balanced and harmonious people-centered development, committed to good, transparent accountable government that is about solutions, positive results, fair treatment and just rewards for all”.
He mentioned areas of focus such as education, health care, sports and entertainment, affordable land and housing, agriculture, employment and disaster prevention including speedy recovery and reconstruction. Also on his team’s agenda is a “return to a culture of values, attitudes, and behaviors” that will allow for all to thrive.
Mr. Linton concluded by expressing his team’s commitment to developing ” industries that are made to function efficiently and well for all”. He spoke against the occurrence where Dominican resources benefit interests out of Dominica and cited an example where after Hurricane Maria, a Barbadian company was contracted to import sand, stone, and water in the form of prefabricated concrete slabs in the rebuilding of homes.
The press conference was brought to a close after receiving questions from the media.
