Dominica Observes Europe Day

Dominica joined the rest of the world in observing Europe Day. Dominica’s National Authorizing Officer for the European Development Fund, Carleen Roberts, said that although a lot is happening with the EU presently, it still “maintains its steadfast partnership with the Government and people of Dominica”.

Roberts mentioned that a magazine called ‘Momentum’ would be published both on hard copy and electronically to “showcase Dominica and EU cooperation and relations”. Further, she mentioned that flagships of the past twenty years will be highlighted in the magazine, including “several programs in agriculture and tourism, geothermal energy development, potable water supply, health and welfare programs under the Social Investment Fund and support in ICT and small business development”.

The magazine is expected to reach a wide diversity of individuals. Europe Day was first observed in 1964 on May 5, by the Council of Europe. Then, the European Union decided to observe it’s own Europe Day on May 9th to commemorate the 1950 Schuman Declaration which essentially proposed French and German coal and steel production under one common high authority. Europe day celebrates European integration.
