WEATHER STATEMENT FROM DOMINICA METEOROLOGICAL SERVICE

Valid from: 6:00 PM on Saturday, April 10th, 2021

.THE ERUPTION OF LA SOUFRIERE Volcano IN ST. VINCENT continues to generate ash plumes which mid to upper winds are pushing over Barbados. This is expected to continue over the next 24 hours. The concern for Dominica is that when this ash sinks, it may be transported westward by the low level wind flow towards our area within the next 48 hours.

A VOLCANIC ASH AND SMALL-CRAFT WARNING MAYBE REQUIRED FOR DOMINICA, IF CONDITIONS WARRANT.

A Small-Craft Warning is issued in this case as reduced visibility is affecting or expected to affect the marine area. Ashfall together with Saharan dust haze may cause a significant reduction in visibility and respiratory problems and people can experience difficulty breathing. Wearing of mask is critical.

People with respiratory illnesses are advised to take the necessary precautions to minimize complications.

Sea users/ Marine users may be required to stay in port during reduced visibility, particularly if your GPS is not in use on your vessels. Livestock owners, check that livestock have enough food and water. You may need to shelter livestock during ashfall. If you must drive during reduced visibility, drive slowly. You may need to use car headlights. Do not use the car’s ventilation system.

The public is advised to be on alert and to closely monitor for updates from the Dominica Meteorological Service.
