Volcanic Unrest Causing Earthquakes

Volcanic Unrest Causing Earthquakes

Residents are asked to note that from last night into the early hours of this morning, a burst of volcanic earthquakes was recorded in South Central Dominica.

Some of these have been reported as felt between 10:00 p.m. yesterday and 5.30 a.m. this morning. They were all at magnitudes 3.1 to 3.4 at five (5) kilometers deep which is considered shallow. The shallower the earthquake is the more they are felt.

The activity is part of an ongoing series of earthquakes in that area which may be described as volcanic unrest. The unrest does not necessarily mean that an eruption will occur, but as seen in 1998, large magnitude earthquakes can occur and so the public should remain vigilant.

All should be aware that we are living on a volcanic island and these events are likely to occur from time to time so be prepared for continuous activities.

The Office of Disaster Management continues to work closely with the Seismic Research Unit in Trinidad to keep you informed. All are asked to listen to your radio stations and other credible media for updates.
