Roseau MP Calls for Responsible Behaviour During Carnival while Mayor Calls for Aggressive Marketing of Product

Member of Parliament for the Roseau Central Constituency, Hon. Melissa Skerrit addressed the official opening of Carnival 2024 on Saturday. She said that her government is involved in 

“The Government stands committed to preserving our cultural tapestry while ensuring sustainable urban growth. Our streets echo the harmonious blend of tradition and progress and we remain resolute in cultivating a country that values its roots while embracing the future.”

She reminded patrons to conduct themselves responsibly while engaging in Carnival activities. 

“As we immerse ourselves in the festivities of Mas Domnik Carnival 2024, let us do so responsibly, with respect for each other and our surroundings and this is who we are. Let us embrace this Carnival as a symbol of unity, resilience and cultural pride. May the spirit of togetherness guide us through 2024 Carnival festivities.”

Meanwhile Mayor of Roseau, Irmine Royer, issued a call to aggressively market the Carnival product.

“Our Carnival culture is seen as an explosion of love; a fusion of different cultures within our country which is being exhibited during this time of year. We have pride ourselves as having the most original Carnival anywhere in the world and we should continue to market this product aggressively. We want to ensure that the economic benefits which are received from ‘The Real Mas’ can touch the lives of common women within our society.”

Royer also paid homage to Alwin Bully “for his sterling and profound contribution to our nation’s cultural heritage”.

The official opening of Carnival 2024 was held on Saturday with the traditional parade through the streets of Roseau and featured two new items, namely a parade through the Windsor Park Sports Stadium and a Clash of the Bands activity featuring two of Dominica’s most prominent bands as well as other entertainment.
