JOB FUNTIONS
As a clerk of works you will be responsible for inspecting construction work to ensure it meets standards and health and safety requirements. We expect you to inspect the workmanship, quality and safety of work on construction sites and reports back to senior managers and clients.
As a clerk of works, you’d be conducting regular site inspections and checking that building plans are being followed correctly. You’d check that work is being carried out to the correct specifications and legal, safety and environmental standards.
These duties include but is not limited to:
- Inspecting construction work and comparing it with drawings and specifications
- Carry out a thorough inspection of workmanship – Skilled labour force and knowledgeable and experienced site agent and foremen are key to good and acceptable workmanship. The Clerk of Works should be able to detect workmanship and materials that do not conform to the contract standards.
- Measuring and quality checking building materials
- Identifying defects and suggesting ways to correct them
- Monitoring progress and reporting to construction managers, architects, and clients
- Keeping detailed records of work
- Referring to plans and taking photographs of work, along with measurements and samples
- Liaising with contractors, engineers, and surveyors
- Carry out Detailed reporting and recording – the Clerk of works should keep the Consultants, and Client fully informed on a regular basis. He/She should inform the lead consultant on decisions required. The Clerk of works records must be very accurate – the Consultants heavily rely on such records. E.g. measurements of works to be covered. The Clerk of Works will also keep a record of the following:-
- Labour force on site
- Weather conditions
- Plant and machinery on site
- Visitors to site
- Drawings received
- Deliveries of materials
- Instructions issued
- Inspections by consultants
- Details of significant events.
Qualifications:
Minimum 5 Years’ experience in this field or related fields
Minimum education: Undergraduate Degree in Building and Civil Engineering, Architecture or Construction Management
As a clerk of works you will need:
- Excellent observational skills and to be able to pay attention to detail
- A broad knowledge of the construction industry covering materials, trades, building methods, and legal requirements
- Good organisational and project management skills
- Good analytical skills
- Excellent communication and negotiating skills
- Good written communication skills, for completing paperwork and compiling reports
- The ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff at all levels
- Be physically fit and comfortable working at heights
- Be able to deliver projects on time and on budget.
