Roseau, Dominica – May 9, 2025 – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy is proud to announce Plant Health Week 2025, scheduled to take place from May 7th to leading up to Plant Health Day Monday May 12th, under the theme “The Importance of Plant Health in One Health.”

Plant health is a cornerstone of Dominica’s food security, agricultural sustainability, and environmental preservation. As pests and plant diseases continue to pose threats to livelihoods, ecosystems, and regional trade, this national observance aims to spotlight the critical work of the Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ) Unit and to foster greater public and stakeholder engagement.

Plant Health Week 2025 will feature a series of interactive and educational events designed to raise awareness, promote best practices in pest and disease management, and strengthen national collaboration on biosecurity.

Key Events Include:

  • May 8th – GAS Community Clean-Up Campaign
    Community-driven clean-up and invasive species removal activities, conducted with support from schools and environmental clubs, aimed at reducing pest habitats.
  • May 9th – Market Day with the Plant Protection and Quarantine Unit
    Direct engagement with vendors at local markets, including educational outreach, pest identification tips, and guidance on maintaining produce quality.
  • May 12th – Plant Health Fair
    A showcase of innovations in crop protection, disease-resistant plant varieties, and environmentally friendly pest control methods.
  • May 12th – DBS Radio Live Discussion
    Experts from the Ministry and partner organizations will share insights on the importance of plant health and sustainable agriculture.

These activities will be carried out in collaboration with several key partners, including the Dominica Export Import Agency (DEXIA)Customs and Excise DivisionDominica State College, Dominica Hucksters Association, and the Ministry of Health.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Greater public awareness and understanding of plant health and its role in One Health.
  • Stronger partnerships between agriculture, trade, and environmental stakeholders.
  • Enhanced knowledge among farmers, students, and vendors on pest management and quarantine practices.
  • Increased recognition of the PPQ Unit’s role in ensuring food safety and facilitating safe agricultural trade.
