International Mountain Chicken Day

International Mountain Chicken Day

Dominica joins Monserrat and the United Kingdom in celebrating International Mountain Chicken Day on September 13th. The day was established to bring awareness to the declining population of this endangered species.

Since 2009, the governments of Dominica and  Montserrat have been working to preserve the Leptodactylus Fallax or Mountain Chicken. In 2002, Chytrid Fungus destroyed most of the population in Dominica. Since then a breeding facility was established at the Botanical Gardens to preserve the remaining healthy population.

When the disease arrived in Montserrat, 50 frogs were airlifted to zoos in the United Kingdom in an effort to preserve disease-free frogs. The Mountain Chicken has been declared extinct in Antigua and Guadeloupe.

Forestry officials say that they have seen an increase in the population of frogs as they go about doing spot checks.
