Daniel Elton Bannis of Castle Bruce was handed a 15-year jail sentence after pleading guilty to the May 14, 2013 manslaughter of 74-year-old Julius Joseph, also of Castle Bruce. The ruling was handed down by High Court Judge Victoria Charles-Clarke yesterday, February 7, 2019.
Although Bannis’ attorney, Tiyani Behanzin pleaded on his client’s behalf for mercy in the sentencing, Justice Charles-Clarke admonished that the deceased was never a threat to Bannis, as they were family friends and Bannis has shown “no remorse whatever even after his guilty plea.” The sentencing was originally set for 19 years, to which she added two additional years, for a total of 21 years. However, a discount of three years and seven months was given to Bannis, minus time he has already served of five years, eight months, two weeks and two days; leaving a balance of 12 years, four months.
