Forty trainers who form part of the network of the Dominica Youth Business Trust (DYBT), providing training to young entrepreneurs in programmes targeted at startup businesses and early post-startup phase enterprises, will receive training in Classroom Management in Adult Education and Andragogy and the Use of ICT in Adult Education from 28 to 29 January 2020.
This training forms part of the Capacity Building support that IOM is providing to the DYBT and the Youth
Development Division with financing from the IOM Development Fund. Support has also been provided by UKAID through the Skills for Youth Employment (SkYE) project. The DYBT focuses on a model by which young people are provided with the wherewithal to establish sustainable businesses, with training being a large component of preparing youth for entrepreneurship.
Youth Officers, other public servants, practitioners and trainers from the private sector all contribute to the entrepreneurship training programmes and also to skills training programmes which improve the quality of employees available to these and other entrepreneurs.
IOM (the International Organization for Migration) is currently engaged in a 2-year project to Build the Capacity of the DYBT to Foster Entrepreneurs Engagement in the Development of Dominica. As part of this internally funded project, pilot training programmes were evaluated based on trainees’ feedback and it was determined that there is a need for sharpening the skills of the trainers to ensure maximum benefit of the training to the young entrepreneurs.
The Training of Trainers programme will be facilitated by the University of the West Indies Open Campus in Dominica. Forty (40) trainers are registered to participate.
Workshops will be delivered to the participating trainer-facilitators over two days. Sessions include “Andragogy and the Use of ICT in Adult Education”, to improve the understanding of how adults learn, so as to better cater to their learning needs and become more proficient facilitators. The “Classroom Management in Adult Education” Workshop will teach participants to establish clear rules of behavior in their training groups, helping to set boundaries of interaction with adult learners while looking out for and fixing disruptive interpersonal relationships within the classroom.
Over the two-day period, the Entrepreneurial Development Programme of the DYBT will also be reviewed for suggested improvements to the curriculum, based on the formal review which was conducted under the project.
DYBT and IOM are pleased that the trainers attached to the DYBT programmes have enthusiastically signed up for the Training of Trainers workshops, indicating a willingness to invest in improving their skills for the benefit of the entrepreneurs who they train. The Youth Development Division through the DYBT is thankful for the resources provided by IOM and UKAID/SkYE, which is assisting in building the capacity of the Trust to support the development of successful entrepreneurs and a more skillful labour force, ready to contribute to the development of Dominica.
