ELECTORAL COMMISSION MUST DELIVER ELECTORAL REFORM NOW

Roseau, 25th February 2023 – Now that Sir Dennis Byron has delivered his report and draft legislation, the advancement of electoral reform process in the Commonwealth of Dominica depends on the Electoral Commission and, most specifically, the chairman of the commission who has the deciding vote to move the process forward.

The people of the Commonwealth of Dominica must now raise their voices and demand that the Electoral Commission immediately embark on a massive electoral reform education campaign to inform the population on the contents of the Byron report and draft legislation to allow for public participation.

As a first step towards the electoral reform education campaign, the Electoral Reform Coalition (ERC) will convene an Electoral Reform Virtual Rally via Zoom from 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday 28th February 2023, which will be broadcast live on Q95 Radio and streamed on various social media platforms. All media houses in Dominica are encouraged to share the event on their facilities.

An invitation has been extended to the chairman and members of the Electoral Commission and an open invitation is extended to all parliamentarians, political parties, the private sector, trade unions and other civil society organizations.

The ERC recognizes the significant role of the Electoral Commission in delivering the long awaited electoral reform to the Commonwealth of Dominica and is prepared to collaborate with the commission, in whatever way possible in achieving that goal. The time has come for the Electoral Commission to deliver on its constitutional responsibility by delivering electoral reform which must be followed with Free and Fair general elections within one year.
