Secretary-General of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), Thomas Letang says that the local and global environment is very hostile for trade unions. He also stated that questions are being raised as to the relevance of trade unions in the labour landscape. Mr. Letang clarified that the role of the trade unions includes, but are not limited to negotiating, wages and working conditions, among others.
Letang further stated that a strategic plan that gives clarity on a way forward is what is needed to give confidence and reassurance to its members. In this strategic plan, Letang provided that challenges need to be looked at and addressed, in addition to measuring the performance of the DPSU and finally satisfying members by paying attention to their needs.
Mr. Letang also stated that ultimately members should be consulted in the implementation of any plans the executive puts forward.
