DOWASCO Water Week Winners and Prize-Giving Ceremony

The Dominica Water and Sewerage Company Ltd. (DOWASCO) is pleased to announce the winners of our various competitions held during Water Week 2022.

This year’s theme for World Water Day was ‘Groundwater, Making the Invisible, Visible.’ As in recent years, DOWASCO invited students to participate in our essay, poster, and debate competitions.

Primary school students were asked to submit posters depicting this year’s theme.  Ten posters from various primary schools around the island were received.  Marlisha St. Jean of the Wotten Waven Primary School emerged winner of the competition. Both the winner and her school will receive cash prizes.

The essay competition was open to both primary and secondary schools.  Primary school students wrote on the topic, ‘How does Groundwater play an important role in the environment?’ Tamar Winston of the Newtown Primary School emerged winner.  She will be awarded a tablet while the school will be awarded a cash prize.

Secondary school students were required to present a paper on the topic ‘Climate change is one of the most threatening environmental challenges of our time.  Discuss the impact of climate change on groundwater and how we can mitigate against these impacts.’  Mia Didier of the St. John’s Academy was awarded first place and will receive a mobile phone.  Her school will receive a cash prize.

Students at the Dominica State College engaged in a debate, one of our highlights of Water Week. Two teams of two students each debated the topic, ‘Groundwater is the Best Supply for Water for Domestic Use in Dominica’.

The proposing side with Desean Denis and Mikkel Charles won the competition and was also the team with the Best Rebuttal.  Sarah Francis and Ronnisa Riley were on the opposing team. Riley won Best Speaker of the debate.

An award ceremony has been carded for Monday May 30 at 10:30am.

The Board of Directors, management and staff of DOWASCO thank all students and schools who participated in our various contests and school presentations.  We recognize that without the participation of our stakeholders, the week of activities would not have been successful.  We look forward to continued partnership in 2023.
