DDA BRINGS SPIRIT OF CARNIVAL WITH MEDIA LAUNCH THIS THURSDAY

Fresh on the heels of the successful hosting of the 21st Edition of the World Creole Music Festival, the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) and the Dominica festivals Committee(DFC) are bringing the spirit of Carnival to local and internationally audiences with a Media Launch of the 2020 Mas Domnik programme, this Thursday 7th November, at the Prevost Cinemall, Roseau, Dominica.

Mas Domnik, known as the “Most Original Carnival” and the “Real Mas” will be celebrated from January 11th with the start of the Stardom Tent and will climax on Carnival Monday and Carnival Tuesday, February 24 and 25th, with street jump-up and parades of Carnival bands and masquerade troupes.  The Real Mas as it is popularly known in the region, for its indigenous masquerade forms such as the Sensay, The Black Devils, The Moko Jumbies, the Band Mauvais and other forms that have long been associated with the island’s carnival culture as well as for its very inclusive and spontaneous nature.

The Media Launch on Thursday 7th November, is in an effort to draw public attention and awareness to the activities being planned for this pre-lenten Carnival as well as to mobilise stakeholders to participate more fully in the planning and organizing of the 2020 Carnival Celebrations in Roseau and across the country.

Events and Festivals Manager at the DFC, Ms. Marva Williams said: “Thursday’s launch is intended to begin exciting the local, regional and diaspora carnival lovers of the type of activities being planned for this year’s carnival and to give them a little taste of what to expect for this grand celebration.” She went on to explain that, “this coming carnival will be bigger and better organized, since we have been working with our stakeholders for several months now, getting their input and putting these ideas together to develop a product that we can all be happy with. We also intend to use the feedback from what our patrons have been telling us, to make the carnival product as exciting as possible for all segments of our population and Carnival lovers in general.”

The 2020 Mas Domnik programme is therefore being seen by the DFC and the DDA as an extension of the efforts to organise another high level event to attract revelers and Carnival lovers just as was done for the WCMF, and to give those looking for a different Carnival experience, the opportunity to sample and enjoy, one of the region’s last remaining indigenous Carnivals.  Organizers are expecting a higher level of participation and will on Thursday, unveil a programme they expect to be fully embraced by carnival lovers.
