Doctor Pens Science Fiction Novel Based On Dominica

Dr. Vince Savarin, an accomplished Doctor from the community of Canefield recently published his first Science Fiction/ Action- Adventure novel.

The 32 year old doctor who is presently specializing in Urology said that he has always had a keen interest in the creative arts. Growing up, he played the guitar at the Canefield Catholic Church and participated in many local drawing and writing competitions.

He added, “While at the Dominica Grammar school in 2006, I placed 2nd in the ECCB/OECS essay competition, writing on the topic ‘What actions can individuals, businesses and governments take to further enhance the tourism industry in the ECCU?’

He explained that he was motivated by a need to create.

“I spent a lot of time in the Roseau Public Library growing up and read many fascinating stories. Great works from renowned authors like Stephen King and Arthur C. Clarke. I always wondered if stories like these could be done from a Caribbean setting.”

According to Dr. Savarin, this book came to him in a dream.

“I saw the young protagonist battling against the elements and I awoke and immediately began to write it down, before the dream faded, as dreams tend to do.”

He added that Dominican folklore is rich with endless possibilities for storytelling. He hopes to be able to write many more stories and to expand upon this one with God’s help.

Savarin thanks God for the ability to create and his wife who he said gave him a journal the day before he had this dream. It is on this same journal that he penned the dream which became his first published book. He says that his family has been a great source of encouragement.

The book is already receiving praise from some of his coworkers who read it and enjoyed it.

When asked about the title, he explained, “The title was a struggle admittedly. After finishing it all, I realized that the story is a journey of self discovery for the young protagonist. I remembered the story of the Prodigal Son; and thought it was fitting and a bit mysterious”.

The book “Prodigal of Dominica” is available for purchase at Jay’s Bookstore and online.

Dr. Savarin encourages everyone to get the book which he says is an excellent choice to read while on the bus or waiting at an appointment. He hopes that parents and teaches will introduce the book to students to encourage them to create action-adventure stories based on Caribbean folklore.

Emonews congratulates and celebrates Dr. Vince on this accomplishment.
