Dominican student Abigail Matthew receives top-score in her research on Parkinson’s Disease

Abigail Matthew, student of the Midwestern State University (MSU) and recipient of the outstanding Good Neighbor Scholarship, commenced her research on the Parkinson’s Disease in the summer of 2022.

In November, 2022, upon interview with Emonews, Matthew explained that her research focused on how a membrane protein chaperone could be used to prevent familial mutants of Alpha-Synuclein Protein Aggregation in Parkinson’s Disease. While she had completed the proposal and abstract by July 2022, the lab work only started in August, 2022.

Since then, Matthew has continued to pursue her research with the aim of expanding her work on the Parkinson’s Disease.

During the course of summer 2023, as a candidate for a research program called UGROW (Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Forum), Abigail completed her research on a groundbreaking treatment for Parkinson’s Disease.

In this program, she received the top score percentage from the evaluators regarding her presentation. While many received 70%-80%, Abigail Matthew received a remarkable 92%. Due to this, she will be traveling to Oklahoma to present her research to many other schools, professors, and doctors regarding the result she has attained.

According to one of the student ambassadors at MSU, “We at Midwestern State University is very proud of the work she has accomplished and hope that many students from Dominica will follow in her footsteps,” he ended.
