The Secretary-General of Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, has responded to concerns from the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) that he has wrongly accreted himself in Dominica’s sovereign affairs.
Chairman of CARICOM, Dr. Timothy Harris said on Tuesday that “CARICOM remains deeply concerned by the actions and statements of the Secretary-General of the Organization of American States which are outside the bounds of his remit as the Head of an international organization,” stating that the OAS’s intervention amounts to inappropriate behavior.
This comment raised concerns by the government of Dominica, through its Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Francine Baron, one day after the tweet from Mr. Almagro had surfaced. Baron stated then that the tweet was inaccurate, “false and misleading.” In his response to CARICOM, Almagro relates the contents of his February 7 tweet which simply stated that he held talks with former Dominican Ambassador, Chrispin Gregoire on the need for electoral reform in Dominica.
The Secretary-General released an official press statement, listing his competencies and duty to report on any such matter in keeping with the democratic principles of the OAS.
