50 Students Receive 6 or more Grade Ones At CSEC

Dominican students have once again demonstrated their determination to succeed in the face of challenges. Despite the fact that there was a major interruption to the academic year s a result of the present pandemic, 50 students were able to obtain 6 or more Grade ones at this year’s CSEC examinations, an increase from last year.

Top performer with a total of 11 ones and 1 two, is Hananel Valerie of the St. Mary’s Academy while Kyra Edwards of the Convent High School was the second best performer with 11 ones.

Jhade Francois of the Portsmouth Secondary School, obtained 10 ones, 2 twos; Kenzo Royer of the Arthur Waldron Seventh Day Adventist obtained 10 ones, 1 two and 2 threes and Shawnalee Gordon of the Convent High School obtained 10 ones,1 two.

The Convent High School had 11 students obtaining 6 or more ones, while the Dominica Grammar School had 7 students. Both the Portsmouth Secondary School and the North East Comprehensive had 6 students while the St. Mary’s Academy and Arthur Waldron Seventh Day Adventist School had 5. The Pierre Charles Secondary and the Isaiah Thomas Secondary had 3 students and the Castle Bruce Secondary and the St.Johns Academy had 2 students each.

There was a decrease of 1.7% in the number of students attaining a Grade 1,2 or 3 compared to 2019. In 2019, the total percentage was 80.4% while in 2020 it was 78.7%.Agricultural Science which is done at only two schools, the Portsmouth Secondary and the Castle Bruce Secondary continues to maintain a 100% pass rate for three years now for( Double Award), while the Single Award dropped from 96.8% to 93%. This year 5 schools had 100% passes in English A. Theatre Arts has maintained 100% passes,  while Music and Visual Arts improved to 100% from previous years.

CXC registrar, Magalie Celestine, said that although the examination council had to administer a modified exam due to the pandemic, ” The Council is confident that candidates performance in 2020 can be compared to past performance trends…Grades earned this year are not different than the grades earned by candidates in these exams in previous years as they are valid, equivalent, fair and of equal status to previous grades awarded”.

748 school candidates and 305 private candidates wrote the 2020 CSEC examinations.
