15 Aspiring Comedians Vie for the “Champion of Laughter” in the First Ever Stand-upComedy Competition: Laugh Out Loud – Dominica

Roseau August 7, 2022 – After months of planning, preparation, mobilization, and sensitization of the population on the comedy art form, the Laugh Dominica Initiative is pleased to announce that fifteen aspiring comedians will vie for the Champion of Laughter (Standup Comedy) in the first ever Laugh Out Loud – Dominica Comedy Competition scheduled for August 27th, 2022, at the Goodwill Parish Hall.
The Laugh Out Loud – Dominica comedy competition is coordinated by 2013 Golden Drum awardee for Literary arts Ian Jackson but comprises of the National Joint Action Movement (NJAM), Dominica News Online (DNO), Come-see-tv, EmoNews and Q95 Radio in the formative stages, however, partnership is open to all who are interested in the development of theatre and more specifically, the comedy art form.
The full slate of competitors will be announced at the end of the week after formalizing the performing rights arrangements with the participants, but the public can expect a real treat of much needed laughter, relaxation and clean entertainment from the competitors which include some popular calypsonians.
A wide cross section of the population will have the opportunity to view the show live in person at the Goodwill Parish Hall or can be part of the virtual audience by subscribing to the pay-per-view live stream on Come-See-Tv. Tickets for the event will be available for sale as of Monday 15th August 2022 on a first come first serve basis.
Comedy is a genre of fiction that consists of discourses or works intended to be humorous or amusing by inducing laughter, especially in theatre, film, stand-up comedy, television, radio, books, or any other entertainment medium.
The LOL-Dominica organizers will pay homage to the late Michael Bruney, Felix Henderson and Lawrence Brumant, three of our most renowned contributors to comedy and the show will be a tribute to Alwin Bully for his role in the development of theatre in Dominica. We recognize the void in entertainment in Dominica, the ravages of Maria and Covid 19, and the role of comedy in allowing the populace to exhale. Laughter is good medicine.

One of the highlights of the event will be a guest performance by the popular character of the People’s Action Theatre radio serial of the 70s and 80s Green Gold, Gwobeh and possibly the return of Franklyn Moses in an endeavor to assist with his rehabilitation. The “Laugh Out Loud -Dominica” (LOL-D) Comedy Competition is intended to be an annual event where the winners will have the opportunity to participate in regional and international competitions. Also, material from the show is expected to be edited for display on the various social media platforms and the winner(s) will have the opportunity to
produce advertisements and participate in one-off performances. There are high expectations for the emergence of a new crop of artists who can replace the fallen stalwarts of the art form.
The winner of the comedy competition, “The Champion of Laughter”, will walk away with $2,500.00 and the second and third place winners will receive $1,500.00 and $1,000.00 respectively.
The population can expect a night of entertainment that Dominica has not witnessed in ages. A night of fun, relaxation, and laughter. Let’s make Laugh Out Loud – Dominica a success
