Dominica joins the rest of the world in celebrating World Tourism Day, today, Friday, September 27, 2019. The day aims to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic values, as well as tourism’s actual and potential contribution to sustainable development.
In line with World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) overarching focus on skills, education and jobs throughout the year, World Tourism Day 2019 is being celebrated under the theme ‘Tourism and Jobs: a better future for all’.
The tourism sector is a leading source of employment, supporting millions of jobs and driving economies globally. Despite generating 10% of the world’s jobs, tourism’s role in job creation is undervalued. According to Minster for Tourism and Culture, Honourable Senator Robert Tonge, “There is no doubt that we are on the cusp of something special in our tourism, as we witness an increase in the level of investment in the sector, by both the public and private sector. Private sector investment led by the developments under the CBI programme has manifested its confidence in the sector by undertaking a wide range of amazingly impressive and high-quality projects. This new confidence in our tourism, has resulted in the creation of hundreds of jobs in the construction of new high-end properties, improvement in major infrastructure like roads and port facilities, and in a number of new ventures supporting the industry. But the jobs are not restricted to construction of hotels and resorts. We are already witnessing the creation of hundreds of decent and sustainable jobs and contributing professional skills in a number of key areas of the industry.”
Director of Tourism and CEO of Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), Mr. Colin Piper, stated “As the tourism authority in Dominica, DDA is committed to human resource development within the tourism industry and continually provides training opportunities to strengthen the skillset of industry stakeholders. Tourism development is also linked to community development as it is an effective tool for poverty alleviation. Job opportunities in the local industry include food and beverage staff, front desk staff, tour guides, dive masters, housekeeping staff, among others”.
