The Waterfront and Allied Workers Union (WAWU) plans on engaging in vigorous recruitment drives during the course of 2019. General Secretary, Mr. Kertiste Augustus mentioned that the purpose of these drives is to ensure that the union maintains its existence.
According to Mr. Augustus, the Laws state that 51% is needed to be given representational status with management so that leaves 49% afloat. This 49% is the responsibility of the shop steward to ensure organization in getting them to be part of the Union. He further stated that the Union negotiates for 43 departments and the collective agreements have to be re-negotiated. The investment in the education and training of the shop steward is needed to strengthen and broaden the shop steward structure.
Shop stewards are representatives of labour unions who connect workers with union officials.
