DOMINICA WINS BEST CARIBBEAN ENERGY PROJECT AMONG THREE REGIONAL HONOURS AT CREF 2026

Dominica’s geothermal energy project has earned major regional recognition at the 2026 Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF), securing awards for Best Caribbean Energy Project and Best Financing Programme, while Honourable Dr. Vince Henderson received the Caribbean Energy Leadership MVP Industry Award.

Dr. Henderson accepted the honours at CREF 2026, held from October 14–16 in Panama City, Panama.

The recognition comes with Dominica’s geothermal power plant now complete and supplying electricity to the national grid. Located at Laudat in the Roseau Valley, the 10-megawatt facility entered commercial operation in July 2026, following the completion of required testing. This marked a historic milestone in the country’s pursuit of greater energy independence.

The Best Financing Programme award recognises the investment strategy and partnerships that helped deliver this major renewable energy project in a small island developing state.

The leadership award honours Dr. Henderson’s contribution to advancing Dominica’s geothermal ambitions and helping guide the project through the complex process of development, financing and delivery.

“For a small country like Dominica, bringing a geothermal project of this scale into operation required conviction, difficult decisions and the determination to keep going through years of technical and financial challenges. These awards recognise that effort and affirm that Dominica can deliver major projects with regional significance.

“I am especially proud that our geothermal resources are now generating electricity for our people, giving us greater control over our energy future and a stronger foundation for economic development,” said Dr. Henderson, Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Business, Trade and Energy.

“This achievement belongs to the people of Dominica. It reflects the vision and support of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, the dedication of our project teams and the confidence of partners who worked with us to make it possible. I am honoured to receive the leadership award, and I share that recognition with everyone who contributed to this national undertaking. Our responsibility now is to build on this investment so that greater energy independence translates into more affordable electricity, stronger businesses and better opportunities for our people,” the Minister added.

The Government of Dominica celebrates these awards as a national achievement and affirmation of the country’s determination to build a cleaner, more resilient and more energy-independent future.
