Roseau, Dominica – October 15, 2026 – Credit unions across Dominica join their counterparts worldwide in celebrating the 78th anniversary of International Credit Union Day (ICU Day) under the theme “A Steady Signal in a Noisy World.” This year’s celebration highlights the vital role credit unions play in providing stability, trust and financial opportunities for their members and communities amid a world of uncertainty and constant change.

Observed annually on the third Thursday in October, International Credit Union Day commemorates the history, achievements and contributions of the global credit union movement. Since its establishment in 1948, the observance has provided an opportunity to recognize the positive impact credit unions and other financial cooperatives continue to make in the lives of millions of people worldwide.

The 2026 theme reflects the enduring values of the credit union movement. In a world filled with uncertainty and change, credit unions remain a steady and reliable presence, grounded in trust, people and community. The occasion also offers an opportunity to express gratitude for the individuals, families and communities whose lives have been improved through access to affordable and inclusive financial services.

Unlike traditional for-profit financial institutions, credit unions operate on a philosophy that places people before profits. For more than 150 years, credit unions worldwide have worked collaboratively to expand access to affordable financial services, helping members achieve their financial goals. Through competitive loan rates, accessible savings opportunities, member-focused service and democratic governance, credit unions continue to demonstrate their commitment to economic and social development.

In Dominica, the Central, Grand Bay, Marigot, National, St. Mary's and West Coast Credit Unions represent an important part of this global movement. These six institutions are among more than 67,000 credit unions worldwide, collectively serving approximately 400 million members across 100 countries.

Dominica's credit union movement has a proud history of service dating back to 1951, when the first credit union opened its doors with a vision to serve its members and communities. Since then, the movement has remained committed to meeting members' financial needs and creating opportunities for individuals and families to prosper.

Through the continued support and confidence of their members, Dominica's credit unions have grown significantly over the years, recording combined assets of EC$1,201,599,584 and a membership of 90,389 according to their 2025 AGM Report. These achievements reflect the strength of the movement and its continued contribution to the country's social and economic development.

As the movement celebrates this important milestone, attention is also drawn to the transformative role credit unions play in underserved urban and rural communities around the world. For many individuals, credit unions provide the means to purchase homes, establish businesses, pursue education and access essential financial services that might otherwise be unavailable to them.

Access to financial services remains vital to building resilient individuals, families and communities. By promoting thrift, self-reliance, democratic participation and volunteer leadership, credit unions continue to uphold the principles established by their founders while adapting to the changing needs of their members.

On this International Credit Union Day, Dominica's credit unions join the global movement in celebrating the difference that cooperation, shared responsibility and a commitment to people can make. The observance serves as a reminder that, through collective effort, credit unions can continue to strengthen communities, create opportunities and contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable future.

As we celebrate 78 years of International Credit Union Day, we extend sincere appreciation to our members for their continued trust and support. The Dominica Credit Union Movement remains committed to strengthening communities, expanding financial opportunities and serving individuals and families for generations to come.
