Leading insurance and financial services entity, Sagicor has adopted six primary schools across the Caribbean for the second year of its revamped Adopt-A-School, corporate
social responsibility programme as part of its Living our Vision Everyday programme.
The announcement was made recently during a virtual media launch, which included Ministry of Education officials from across the Caribbean, Principals attached to each school, teachers, students and Sagicor officials.
The six primary schools to be adopted for the current 2022-2023 school year, are Golden Grove Primary in Antigua and Barbuda; Ellerton Primary in Barbados; Atkinson Primary in Dominica; Piparo Presbyterian Primary in Trinidad and Tobago; Boguis Primary in St. Lucia; and finally, Deane Glasford Primary in St. Kitts and Nevis. As was the case with last year, this year’s programme is set to conclude in July 2023, after which a new batch of schools will be chosen.
The programme is underpinned by four key pillars: physical environment, health, developmental and educational programmes and safety and will involve support in various forms including upgrades to the schools’ facilities, support of various school initiatives and overall outreach.
Schools were selected from several nominations submitted by Sagicor team members in each territory, with the final schools chosen by staff committees after a period of review and shortlisting. For 2021-2022, the selected schools received assistance with several projects, including the renovation and refurbishing of outdated facilities on the premises, donation of computer equipment and other educational resources.
Sagicor’s President and CEO, Robert Trestrail said the company is pleased to continue this programme after its successful rollout and execution in 2021.
“The schools we supported not only received assistance for the projects they identified, but also benefitted from other initiatives we brought to the table. Throughout the school year, we executed basic health and wellness checks for the students; donated stationery and other school supplies; encouraged environmental preservation with the donation of plants to the schools’ gardening programmes; among other activities”, he said. “This programme allows us to reach across borders and impact our students in meaningful ways, because we are of the view that the educational system needs the support of corporate entities like Sagicor. We are therefore pleased to be able to further cement our commitment to our communities with this programme.”
