Prime Minister’s Remarks at Independence Anniversary Gala in London Emphasize Unity, Diaspora’s Role

Castries, Saint Lucia – Hon. Philip J Pierre, delivered a poignant address at the Prime Minister’s Independence Anniversary Gala  in London, marking the 45th anniversary of Saint Lucia’s independence from the United Kingdom. Despite the passing months since the actual anniversary date, the significance of this milestone remains undiminished, symbolizing a journey of resilience and freedom.

In his remarks, the Prime Minister reflected on the enduring struggle for independence, tracing it back to the ancestral fight against slavery and the subsequent quest for constitutional recognition. He highlighted ongoing efforts to solidify Saint Lucia’s sovereignty, including the adoption of the Caribbean Court of Justice as the final appellate court and the ongoing review of constitutional reforms.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of the diaspora, Prime Minister Pierre expressed gratitude for their contributions to the nation’s development. He underscored the importance of unity and collaboration, emphasizing the shared goal of building a prosperous Saint Lucia.

The Prime Minister also provided an update on the government’s achievements and ongoing initiatives, including economic revitalization efforts, social interventions, and infrastructure projects. He assured Saint Lucians of his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and citizen-centric governance.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister announced plans to grant citizenship to third-generation Saint Lucians living abroad and unveiled the Diaspora Investment Bill to encourage diaspora engagement and investment in Saint Lucia’s future.

In closing, the Prime Minister reiterated the theme of this year’s Independence anniversary, “Douvan Ansanm – building a nation through unity, resilience, and creativity,” calling for continued collaboration and solidarity among Saint Lucians at home and abroad.
