Former President and Member of the National Health Commission (NHC), Eluid Williams said that the change in the management and organizational structure of the hospital is in the benefit of the country and its citizens.
He said, “There are many things at the hospital that can change and of necessity will change…This is not to say that there isn’t very good work going on at PMH what we are seeking to do is to improve it. It is not going to cost an arm and a leg, what will be different is that when the Government makes twenty, thirty million dollars available for running the hospital, we are saying the Government must know what this is being spent for, what it cost; if you go to the casualty you get services done but there is a cost to that, so the Government in paying for that will know that it is not that the individual will necessarily have before you can get care, you will have to put out a credit card or an insurance. No, that’s not going to be the situation”.
He said that while many employees are doing exceptional work, there are those who ‘give a bad name to PMH’ because ‘presumably they are not accountable for their actions.
He said further that under the new model of the World Health Organization (WHO) no one is to be denied care because he cannot afford it. He stressed that the restructuring of the hospital is to focus on greater efficiency.
