National Abattoir Undergoes $5 Million Upgrade to Boost Local Meat Production

The National Abattoir is currently undergoing a significant refurbishment as part of the Government of Dominica’s continued efforts to modernize the country’s agricultural infrastructure.

With an investment exceeding $5 million, the upgrade is aimed at improving hygiene standards, operational efficiency, and animal welfare practices in line with international benchmarks.

This initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to support local farmers, reduce Dominica’s food import bill, and enhance national food security.

Upon completion later this year, the upgraded facility will be capable of processing up to 1,000 poultry birds per hour and 50 pigs per day, creating a more sustainable and reliable meat production industry to serve the local market.
