The Banana Unit of the Ministry of Blue and Green Economy, Agriculture and National Food Security on Thursday October 15 2020, held a one- day intensive training session for thirty-five (35) core commercial banana and plantain farmers on the best practices for crop production.
The aim of the training was to expose and inspire these commercial farmers to adopt best practices in banana and plantain for consistency in production, export market quality assurance and record keeping which will help prepare their farms for DOMGAP (Dominica Good Agricultural Practices) Certification by the Dominica Bureau of Standards.
The practical session held on the 7.5 acre banana holding of Culmore Shillingford in Ti Grandfond included training in:
1. Plant Selection and Planting
2. Pest and Disease Management
3. Record Keeping for DOMGAP Certification
4. Use of Personal Protection Equipment
5. Successful Production and Quality Management Tips
The MoBGEANFS hopes that this session will be replicated soon to encourage farmers within the other agricultural regions to aspire to the same quality and production standards.
