Celebrating Dominica’s 46th Independence: “Péyi Nou, Kado Nou”

As we come together to celebrate Dominica’s 46th Anniversary of Independence under the theme, “Péyi Nou, Kado Nou – “Our Country, Our Gift” – let us reflect on the tremendous gift that Dominica is to all of us, at home and abroad. Our country, with its rich natural beauty and strong cultural heritage, stands as a testament to the resilience, determination, and unity of its people. This special day is an opportunity to honour not just our history, but also the partnerships that continue to strengthen our path forward.

At the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Dominica, we are proud to be part of these collective efforts to build a stronger, more resilient Dominica. Our work centers around the belief that every person – whether born on this island, part of our diaspora, or a migrant who has chosen to make Dominica their home – plays an essential role in shaping our nation’s future. Migrants and the diaspora contribute not only to our economy but also to the richness of our cultural diversity, enhancing the social fabric that defines us as Dominicans.

This year’s Independence theme, “Péyi Nou, Kado Nou, reminds us that our country is indeed a gift, but it is a gift that is shared and enriched by all who contribute to its growth and success. Partnerships are vital in this process, from the strong ties we maintain with our diaspora, whose love for Dominica transcends borders, to the collaborative efforts between government, private sector, and international organizations like IOM, working together to ensure that our people and communities thrive.

We must also recognize the importance of migrant integration. As we celebrate our independence, we embrace the contributions of those who have joined our society, bringing their skills, traditions, and experiences to enrich the nation. Together, we are creating a more inclusive Dominica, where diversity is celebrated, and everyone has the opportunity to contribute to the country’s development.

On this 46th Anniversary of Independence, let us reaffirm our commitment to building a united, inclusive, and resilient Dominica. Whether we are Dominicans by birth, by choice, or by connection through our diaspora, Dominica is our gift – a gift that we all share the responsibility to nurture and protect for future generations.

Happy Independence, Dominica!
May we continue to celebrate and cherish the gift of our beautiful country, together in unity.
