Jean Lawrence-Mathurin Honored

Jean Lawrence-Mathurin,  founder of the Siffleur Montagne Chorale and brother of Cultural icon Raymond Lawrence, was honored last Wednesday for her contribution to the preservation of Culture in Dominica.

Fifty years ago Mathurin founded the noted Siffleur Montagne Chorale which pioneered the emergence of folk songs in everyday life and paved the way for groups like the Sisserou singers. The concert featured the Sisserou Singers, River Song, Past Members of the Siffleur Montagne Chorale and many others.

Founder of the Sisserou Singers, Pearl Christian in reading Jean’s citation said that wherever Jean lived she continued making beautiful Dominican Folksongs. She said that the songs were varied and catchy and made for every occasion whether sacred or secular. She said that she insisted that the Sisserou Singers be custodians of Jean’s music.
