Health Center Named After Wife Of Late Opposition Leader

The Georgetown health center has been named the Olivia Douglas Health and Wellness Center after the wife of the late Honourable Michael ‘Mike’ Douglas, former Opposition Leader and parliamentary representative of Portsmouth.

Nurse Douglas, a Jamaican by birth joined the nursing profession in Dominica after arriving from England with her late husband. She held various roles in the profession including Departmental Sister and tutor at the  Princess Margaret Hospital School of Nursing. She is recognized as a ‘pioneer in the  revolution of Primary Health Care in the 1980’s’.

Project Director of Montreal Management Consultants Est. (MMCE) Ahmad Alkhatib says, “These health centers will transform health care in Dominica as they will empower and engage the communities through the availability of local healthcare options. In compliance with this government’s requirements and specifications, these health centers are fully equipped for your everyday health care needs and convenience for the handicapped and elderly citizens”.

The Olivia Douglas Health Center was built by Robin construction. On the ground floor is a doctor’s office, nurse offices, two examination rooms, two clinics and a pharmacy, while on the top floor is living area for the nurses with two bedrooms, a kitchen and a living area and a balcony.

MMCE has the responsibility of building 12 health centers around the island. 8 health centers have been completed so far while the others are expected to be completed in April, May and October.
