Grand Fond Native Dr. Curtison George Earns Doctorate of Law in International Relations/ Politics.

Dr. George has earned a Doctorate of Law in International Politics from the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, China, marking an extraordinary personal and national achievement. Born and raised in the community of Grand Fond, Dominica, Dr. George’s journey from a modest upbringing to academic distinction is a powerful story of resilience, purpose, and faith.

His doctoral dissertation, titled “Bringing Small States In: A Study of Caribbean Small Island Developing States in International Climate Politics,” examined how Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) assert their influence in international climate negotiations through moral authority, existential narratives, and strategic coalition-building.

This research is both timely and innovative, offering a fresh perspective on global diplomacy. It is particularly significant for the Caribbean region, where the effects of climate change are not just abstract forecasts but actual experiences, including rising sea levels and intensified hurricanes, as well as economic vulnerabilities linked to environmental instability. Dr. George’s work directly addresses the urgent need for the region to be acknowledged not only as a victim of the climate crisis but also as a strong voice in shaping its solutions.

Dr. George continues to live by the motto of his alma mater, Castle Bruce Secondary School: “Excellence is not an act but a habit, radiate that vision.” It was there that he developed a strong academic foundation and a passion for learning that would propel him towards higher education. In 2013, he began that journey after receiving a government scholarship to pursue studies abroad. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Management, followed by a Master’s degree in Public Administration Management. His outstanding academic performance at both levels later earned him further scholarships to undertake doctoral studies in International Politics.

“This doctorate isn’t just mine,” Dr. George says. “It belongs to my community, my mentors, and the students and adults I’ve had the honor of teaching over the years. I want young people, especially in rural communities, to know that your start does not determine your future. I also want to encourage them to seize the available opportunities, no matter how small they may seem at first. Sometimes, a single step can open doors you never imagined existed.”

With his commitment to contributing to national, regional, and global conversations on climate justice. He wants to continue advocating for policies that center the voices of the most vulnerable, those who are often overlooked but never without power.

Dr. George is profoundly thankful for the steadfast support he received throughout this journey, from mentors who believed in his potential to family and friends who stood by him through every obstacle. Their encouragement, guidance, and sacrifices were crucial in helping him achieve this milestone.
