The Dominica Cancer Association(DCA) held its annual Walk for Cancer Care, this year dubbed Drive For Cancer Care on Sunday October 4. The event which was modified because of the COVID-19 pandemic, saw patrons driving from Roseau to Portsmouth with a stop at St.Joseph.
President of the DCA, Ms.Yvonne Alexander said that the numbers were very encouraging.
” I am very pleased to see so many of you and there are many others who will join us along the route. There is also a group coming from Marigot… We want to thank you for braving the weather…”
She said that the idea came forth out of a need to keep raising awareness and to continue to raise funds to support the work of the organization.
Alexander commended all those who continue to support the work of the DCA and encouraged all to be safe and act on information being disseminated. She reminded all to attend to their health and get tested because ‘Early Detection Save Lives’.
Cancer survivor Irma Lloyd, said, “It was not an easy journey”, in referring to her own experience with the disease.
She continued, “It was an opportunity for me to demonstrate my faith and total trust in God; an opportunity to walk in victory and praise God regardless of circumstances; an opportunity to say, yes God, Your will, Your way”.
Lloyd said that eight years ago, she detected a lump through self examination then heard the devastating news. However, she overcame after surgery and chemotherapy. She referred to fellow survivors as the warriors and remembers left as testament to those who have passed on.
A beautiful balloon release ceremony was held to remember those who lost the battle during the last year.
