Dominican Shelly Bazil- Smith has written a children’s book which combines her understanding of children as a Behavioral Therapist and her love for words and language. The book tells of a child’s experience in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.
Smith explained, “The concept for ‘Praying for Coconuts’ came after I viewed a news clip from Dominica post Hurricane Maria in 2017. A little girl spoke to the journalist expressing so articulately her experience of the storm , including the obvious absence of the trees”.
She said that she knew she wanted to do something after seeing the news item and that while ‘writing a book was not her first choice, it was the best approach’.
Smith said, “Children are often forgotten in the midst of tragedy whether founded in natural disasters or not. As a trained Behavioral Therapist, I wanted to find a way to somehow introduce a story of HOPE- after the Storm”.Smith hopes that ‘this book will be able to assist children in understanding that the aftermath of a storm, although scary, isn’t permanent and that the coconuts like everything else will be back again’.
Emonews congratulates Shelly Bazil-Smith.
