Dominican Launch Commonwealth House in Birmingham to Mark VE Day 80

As the world commemorates the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, the Dominican community in the British Armed Forces has taken a significant step to honour their enduring legacy by launching the Commonwealth House in Birmingham.

During World War II, approximately 16,000 *Approximately 16,000 West Indians volunteered to serve alongside the British during World War II. Many also joined the armed forces in North America, Around 6,000 West Indians served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Canadian Air Force, taking on roles from fighter pilots and bomb aimers to air gunners and ground staff. Caribbean air force personnel received 103 decorations for their service.

Today, Dominicans continue to serve in the UK, with around 1,350 Commonwealth citizens recruited annually. One of these is Staff Sergeant Phillip Peltier, from Pointe Michel village parish of St Luke, who has dedicated 22 years to the British Armed Forces. As an Army physical training instructor, Phillip is now part of the transformation of a 142-year-old building into the first Commonwealth House-a hub for military personnel from all 56 Commonwealth nations, offering support and opportunities for personal and professional growth.

On May 3rd and 4th, Phillip was joined by 40 members of the British Armed Forces, including Sanjog from the Royal Logistics Corps and Mevin from the Royal Artillery and Ivai former Royal Air Force from Mauritius who also spoke creole, to celebrate the launch.  Phillip remarked, “Commonwealth House symbolises unity, cooperation, and collaboration among all Commonwealth nations. It embodies the values of democracy, equality, and cultural diversity we bring to the UK.”

Samuel T. Reddy, CEO and Founder of Leavers to Leaders (LTL), coordinated this project, added, “It is a great honour to have Phillip with us, we joined in 2001 at the peak of our youth and today it is important to come together to make an impact in the community”.

This project will help current and future Commonwealth personnel gain valuable qualifications and make a meaningful impact in both their birth and adopted countries.”

The Commonwealth House stands as a lasting tribute to the service and sacrifice of all Caribbeans and all Commonwealth citizens, fostering unity and opportunity for generations to come. The Commonwealth House is located in Walsall and will be opened in 2027 for the Invictus Games in Birmingham. In the next two years, 300 service personnel will be able to gain their national qualifications in construction, while 30 will be able to use the project for their MSC / MBA in sustainability leadership development with LTL academy. The aim is that this will serve as a model for all those who wear military uniforms across the Commonwealth and are looking to make a meaningful impact on society in a sustainable way.
