The Dominica Orlando Movement (DOM), a group of individuals with the common goal of promoting Dominica and its culture, was established in September 2015 following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika in August 2015.
Notably, DOM seeks to connect Dominicans locally to those living abroad with the aim of fulfilling their mission of spreading awareness about the country and uniting Dominicans in Central Florida under one flag and one mission. At current, the group consists of 22 active members and has attracted the support of many persons.
Notably, DOM has been quite active since 2015, having raised over $20,000.00 in supplies to assist the citizens of Dominica living both locally and abroad. DOM networks with other Dominicans and Caribbean associations to provide financial support to Dominicans who have dire needs.
In 2018, a dinner fundraiser was held and some of the proceeds were donated to the Dominica Infirmary in aid of the residents. Furthermore, in 2019 DOM donated supplies with a total value of $3500.00 to support the Grotto Home residents with food and personal items.
Unfortunately, in 2020 the team was unable to raise sufficient funds due to the Covid-19 pandemic but managed to organize a Christmas giveaway by way of three $75.00 Walmart gift cards.
Quite recently in January 2022, DOM made a voluntary donation of school items and sanitary products to the Tete Morne Primary School. Principal of the Tete Morne Primary School expressed deepest thanks for such a significant contribution to the staff and students. “I would like to thank the Dominica Orlando Movement for this kind gesture. We are thankful because we know the children are going to put it into good use,” she stated. She added that the donation will serve to enhance the students learning, reading and artistic skills. It will also help them with hygiene because of the sanitizers donated.
One member of DOM has indicated that some items of donation have been delayed due to the agency however, as soon as such items are on island the school will receive the donation in its entirety.
Despite the pandemic, DOM remains committed to giving back to the Dominican people both locally and regionally and ensures that all DOM donations are used for non-profit purposes and to the benefits of all Dominicans.
