Dominica captures top three position in the OECS “More Than Just Islands” Competition

On January 13, 2022, the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation hosted the OECS ‘More Than Just Islands’ Caribbean prize giving ceremony. Remarkably, Dominica captured all top three positions in the regional competition as well as the People’s Choice Award.

Shamica Sorhaindo was crowned the winner of the competition and captured the People’s Choice Award while Shalina Samuel better known as ‘Shalina’ was awarded 1st place and Gael “Trilla G” Jno Baptiste took 2nd place.

The OECS representative, Ms. Allena Joseph, congratulated Dominica for such outstanding submissions. Joseph expressed, “The OECS Commission is on its second year of implementation of the project ‘building resilience in the Eastern Caribbean through the reduction in marine litter (ReMlit)” which acquired funding from the government of Norway.” This project focuses on enhancing and harmonizing policies relating to waste management, educating on behavior changes with respect to waste practices and facilitating concrete projects to reduce marine litter.

Moreover, Joseph noted that the “More Than Just Islands” competition is one of the outreach activities in the education campaign under the theme ‘tapping ocean pollution from turf to surf’. The campaign seeks to educate persons on the relations between land and sea and the impacts of bad on land practices.

Furthermore, winner of the competition, Ms. Shamica Sorhaindo expressed, “Thank you very much to OECS, Solid Waste and Josephine Gabriel for sponsoring this amazing project. It was very exciting especially behind the scenes. We truly had a lot of fun.”

Additionally, Shalina Samuel, first place winner, expressed her deepest thanks and appreciation to those who made this possible. “Thank you so very much Solid Waste for actually giving us the opportunity to work together and become successful at the end of the project. It was a very exciting experience to go out with other artists and showing off our talents and skills. Thank you to OECS, Josephine Gabriel, our camera person and to everyone who aided us,” she voiced.

The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation thanks all participants for their submissions and express warm congratulations to all.
