Covid-19 Status Update for Dominica as of December 2nd 2021

According to National Epidemiologist, Dr. Shalauddin Ahmed, as of December 2nd 2021, there are 396 total active cases. Of this total, there are 38 new cases of which thirty-four (34) are antigen positive and four (4) are PCR positive.

With respect to the demography and severity of new cases, there is a higher number of female positive patients especially within the age range of 18 to 65. There are no male patients who tested positive for Covid-19 between the age range of 12 to 17. Moreover, 50% are symptomatic with mild symptoms, 47% are asymptomatic and 3% are experiencing severe symptoms.

Furthermore, as it pertains to the current active cases, 56% are female while 44% are male. Based on the statistics it is evident that there are more female positive patients at the Covid-Care Complex. Most of the active cases are within the age range of 18-59, showing great vulnerability of the middle age population. In terms of severity of active cases, 51% are experiencing mild symptoms, 44% are moderate and 5% are presenting with severe symptoms thus requiring oxygen therapy.

Unfortunately, there is a total of forty (40) Covid-related deaths. From this total, 18 are males and 22 are females, all within the age range of 40 to 107 years. Additionally, the median age range is 80 years of age. Notably, 97.5% of the total deaths were patients experiencing comorbid medical conditions and 95% were unvaccinated.

While it is evident that there is a clear correlation between one’s deaths and vaccinated status, it is noteworthy that 54.2% of the target population took at least one dose of the vaccine while 50.4% of the target population are now fully vaccinated. According to Dr. Ahmed, “Since the introduction of vaccines for the ages 12 to 17, we have seen less number of Covid-19 cases.”

Moreover, Ahmed notes that our daily trend of Covid-19 cases from July 28th to December 2nd, 2021 is up and down but in terms of weekly average it is stable at 41 cases.

Though there is greater stability with respect to the weekly trend, the officials continue to stress the public health measures. Dr. Ahmed re-echoed that persons should get vaccinated, continue to wear face masks, avoid social gatherings and wash and sanitize hands frequently.

The end of covid-19 is uncertain but one should carefully consider the health and safety measures put in place to safeguard their lives and that of others. Stay proactive and stay safe.
