Community Health Behind Bars: Best Price & Fresh Market Pharmacy Bring Vital Checks to Dominica State Prison

On April 23, 2025, Best Price and Fresh Market Pharmacy brought its community outreach health initiative behind the walls of the Dominica State Prison, delivering free primary health checks to over 50 inmates. The outreach was aimed at raising awareness about the importance of early detection of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and empowering inmates to take ownership of their health.

Leading the event were Mr. Errol Thomas, Pharmaceutical Consultant of Fresh Market Pharmacy, and Mr. Israel Fontaine, Lead Pharmacist, who both addressed the inmates on the importance of personal health responsibility and preventative care. The session was followed by free health screenings conducted by a team of dedicated nurses, checking vital signs and providing health advice tailored to the needs of each participant.

Inmates were each presented with a token of appreciation, and in a further show of goodwill, the pharmacy made a donation to both the prison’s kitchen and health block, contributing to the broader well-being of the facility.

“This outreach was about more than just screenings; it was about giving each person the knowledge and encouragement to value their health,” said Ms. Marsha Augustine, Marketing Specialist at Best Price and Fresh Market Pharmacy. “We sincerely thank the inmates for stepping forward, participating actively, and choosing to engage in better health practices while serving their sentences.”

The event was warmly received by both inmates and prison staff, with Ms. Syndie Thomas noting that, “We truly recognize the value of this outreach initiative, and we’re pleased to share that the pharmacy is already planning a follow-up visit to offer additional health screenings in the near future.”

Best Price and Fresh Market Pharmacy is a pillar in Dominica’s healthcare retail sector, offering a full range of pharmaceutical services, wellness consultations, and community outreach programs. As part of their ongoing commitment to public health, free health checks are offered bi-weekly, alternating between the Best Price and Fresh Market Pharmacy locations. These checks include but not limited to blood pressure monitoring, blood glucose testing, and personalized health advice from licensed pharmacists and healthcare professionals.

This initiative reflects the pharmacy’s dedication to accessible, preventative care for all, reaffirming its belief that health is a right, not a privilege.
