Black History Month 2019 was launched on February 1st, 2019 at the UWI Open Campus under the theme, “KNOW THYSELF”. Opening Remark came from Cozier Frederick who welcomed everyone to the ceremony. Franklyn Georges and his wife gave educated the audience on the origin and importance of Black History Month.
The topic of Global, CARICOM and Dominica Reparation was handled by Lloyd Pascal and Dr. Damien Pascal. Both elaborated on the importance of Reparation and how relevant it is to Black History. Solidarity messages came from the National Youth Council President Paul Baron, Raymond Lawrence of Cultural Division and a representative from the House of Nyabingi.
Ms. Renata Charles highlighted some of the activities for Black History Month. Among them are outreach activities to the schools on the island, panel discussions and an African Head Tie day. To entertain the audience, Jeno Jacob, Haxey, Picky and Delroy Williams performed poems and songs. The ceremony ended with a drumming session.
