The Prime Minister of Dominica Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit said that at the sitting of parliament on Tuesday 25, April bills related to issues affecting the family will be tabled.
He said, “On the agenda for this meeting of the House of Assembly are the family bills which seek to improve the circumstances of our women, children, and elderly, and offer them greater protection, care, and support under our laws”.
He continued, “The bills include measures to provide for the equal status of children meaning that all discriminatory provisions in the law relating to a child born out of wedlock will be removed. This measure will ensure that all children have equal status under the law regardless of the marital status of their parents. Importantly, it also addresses matters of succession and inheritance”.
He added, “ An act for a law relating to maintenance of children will also be introduced to conform with the United Nations convention on the rights of the child. The law will seek to improve on the existing provisions related to the obligations of both parents to maintain a child”.
