Members of the public gathered at the Dominica Public Service Union building to participate in another discussion on electoral reform organized by the Electoral Reform Group.
Attendees were graced with the presence of the Attorney General, Levi Peter and president of BCAD, Anthony Leblanc who presented quite well on the topic of indelible ink, voter ID cards, cleaning of the voters’ list and the confirmation of foreign voters.
In his presentation, Leblanc commented on some of the issues raised by the commission, such as the need for a Parliamentary amendment to implement the use of the ID cards. He contends that a parliamentary amendment was not used to implement the use of indelible ink. Further, if biometrics are so important why do we not have biometric data on our passports which is by far a superior document.
The Attorney General stressed that the laws need to be changed in order to effect any change in the electoral process. For example, he said that in order to introduce ID cards electors must be compelled by law to use them.
It is clear that the public appreciated the dialogue and looks forward to more of such.
