All Students Qualified for Graduation Says Principal; Entertainment Guru Delivers Powerhouse Speech At Alma Mata

Marva Williams whose name is synonymous to entertainment in Dominica was privileged to stand before the class of 2025 and deliver the feature address at the graduation ceremony of her Alma Mata, the Grandbay Secondary School, renamed the Pierre Charles Secondary.

Williams who herself was valedictorian in her year was a bit emotional as her nephew who lost his mom, her sister, was also part of the class of 2025. However, she was able to hold back the tears and deliver an outstanding oration.

One could almost hear the pride and joy in the deputy principal’s voice as he introduced Williams whose accolades from the time of her youth, at school and in her community, to now, is impossible to list in this feature.

Williams credited the institution as the place where she began her life’s journey. She referenced the graduation theme which was a quote from Malcolm X and said that it couldn’t be more fitting for the occasion. She said that education is definitely the passport that empowers persons to explore to their full potential.

She added,

“Graduates, today you receive more than a certificate. You hold in your hands the keys to your future, the result of years of learning, sacrifice, discipline and determination.”

Williams cautioned the students, reminding them that life is uncertain and not always linear. She drew on her own experiences at the institution to tell the class of 2025, that they have been prepared for greatness.

“Look at me”, she said, “I am you- a few chapters ahead in this journey called life”.

She reiterated,

“Now Graduates, listen closely. Life is a journey- a winding, unpredictable, sometimes chaotic path. You climb mountains, you stumble into valleys; some days the road will be paved and easy, other days, you feel like you’re walking in the dark, literally… You will make your plans but life will unfold in its own way. But don’t be afraid of detours. Don’t be afraid of change. Every step, every twist and turn is part of the journey called life and the best part, YOU {emphasis added} get to choose how you show up on that journey”.

Williams concluded her speech by giving the students ten guiding principles or pillars to help them stay grounded when life feeels uncertain.

Meanwhile, school principal, Miss Lyn Registe congratulated the students because all of them met the requirements for graduation. The first time she has experienced such overwhelming success in any graduating class during her tenure. She commended their growth over the years, especially their resilience and courage, having been the cohort to enter school during Covid19 pandemic.

She added, “This is a moment to bask in, not just for what you’ve achieved but for who you’ve become”.

“You’ve learned lessons far beyond textbooks and exams. You may have discovered the importance of standing up for what you believe in. You’ve found your voice, your passion and built healthy friendships that I hope will carry you a lifetime”’ she said.

She advised them to keep preparing for their future as they continue to seize opportunities available.

The principal thanked family and friends for their unwavering support. She also thanked her dedicated staff for pouring into the lives of the class of 2025.

“Your impact reaches far beyond today. Every lesson taught, every word of encouragement shared, every extra moment sacrificed have helped in the holistic molding and carving process responsible for shaping our students’ bright future.”

The Pierre Charles Secondary School graduation ceremony was held under the theme, “Education is the passport to the future for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”.
