A FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR DOMINICA FROM 6AM THIS MORNING TO 6PM THIS EVENING.

The Meteorological Service has issued a

* Flash Flood Watch for Dominica

* From 6am this morning to 6pm this evening, Thursday October 1st, 2020

* Unstable conditions due to the passage of a strong tropical wave with a low chance of development is affecting the island chain including Dominica. Satellite and Radar imagery indicated that light to moderate showers and isolated areas of heavy showers and thunderstorms affected Dominica overnight. The forecast is for showers and thunderstorm activity as well as gusty winds to continue to affect the island during today with rainfall accumulations up to 3 inches expected with higher amounts in elevated areas. Flash flooding is therefore possible.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS FLASH FLOODING IS POSSIBLE.

People in areas or communities that are prone to flooding, landslide and falling rocks should be vigilant and should take all precautionary measures to protect life and property.

This watch may be upgraded to a warning later today should conditions become necessary.

POSSIBLE IMPACTS FOR DOMINICA

  • Shallow rivers, streams, gutters and ravines may overflow their banks and flood surrounding areas. Roadways may also be flooded.
  • Landslides due to intense rainfall as well as rock falls from overhanging cliffs

Loose objects may become missiles in gusty winds. Gusty winds may result in dangerous sea conditions, especially on the east coast.

Residents should continue to monitor for updated information from The Dominica Meteorological Service as it becomes available.

Please note that a greater degree of cloudiness, more frequent rainfall and higher rainfall amounts are normally experienced across the east coast and interior of Dominica.
